Le PhOsphène

For its next event, Le PhOsphène offers a double bill. The first film to be screened, now a classic, was censored upon its release in 1959, but distributed through an underground network of film clubs of the time. The second, released three years ago, still has no distributor despite its innovative and surprising quality. Come watch Hiroshima mon amour, by Alain Resnais, followed by Un lac, by Philippe Grandrieux, and let’s discover if film clubs really have a place in contemporary film practices despite online downloading and videos on demand.

Concordia IMCA: Lumin
Lumin is a group show highlighting work by emerging undergraduate artists engaged in interdisciplinary and digital media practices. The works explore the experiential, the performative, and the interactive in installation art, drawing on the unifying theme of light, and it's cohort, illumination. From the warm nostalgic glow of the TV screen to the vivid images created by sound and movement alone, the works examine notions of what illumination can mean; experimentation, research and knowledge, fictional imaginings, immersive spaces, the studio as workshop, the workshop as stage, the stage as experimentation.

The installation explores principles of anamorphosis, applied to moving images projected in the performance space. The piece is presented as an installation on May 7. Titan and Beyond the Infinite, an audio/visual projection by artist Jean-Pierre Aubé, is an interpretation of automated space probe Huygens' "log book.” Using authentic data collected from Huygens by the European Space Agency, the artist conveys a personal interpretation of this key moment in space exploration. sessile, an installation by Steve Daniels proposes a colony of 50 kinetic pods which respond to changes in ambient light levels by opening and closing their limbs. AGIR
Full of humanity, subtle yet complex, the audiovisual works presented in AGIR are born of a collaboration between 49 incarcerated women – approached by virtue of their unique experiences – and 8 professional artists – invited into the province’s main detention centres. The works created explore the link that exists between incarceration and poverty in its many forms: economic, social, familial, cultural and emotional. AGIR, presented by Société Elizabeth Fry du Québec and Engrenage Noir / LEVIER, exposes the individual plights of women who are in conflict with the law and allows us to interact with them in ways that contradict the usual stereotypes, that is, in an artistic context.
