Eastern Bloc acts as a creative laboratory for production and exhibition, but first and foremost we consider ourselves to be a space open to new ideas. Therefore, it is with great pleasure that we celebrate the opening of our New Media production and research lab, with a specialization in electronics and systems-based practices and related artistic fields. The lab is inspired by open source philosophy and culture, and it is in this spirit that we encourage the sharing of ideas and designs that benefit the community at large. The lab will be a space for developing new and innovative ideas through workshops, discussions and research groups.
The mandate of the lab is:
- To offer a shared lab space to emerging artists for the production of New Media artworks in the fields of electronics, fabrication and systems-based practices.
- To promote, support and encourage the use of Open Source software and hardware whenever possible.
- To promote and encourage DIY and hacker culture from an artistic perspective within the lab community .
- To educate and inform the members, as well as the general artistic community, through a series of workshops and conferences.
- To develop custom tools and software in collaboration with the membership.
- To offer technical support as well as a workspace dedicated to artists in residency and artist members.
- To develop tools and software in response to specific artistic needs.
- To develop partnerships with other labs on a national and international level.
- To promote the projects conceptualized and realized in the lab.
- To foster outreach initiatives with the local community.
